On this page you can find several items related to the 83rd Infantry Division.

At the Post Exchange (PX) or in any cheap shop near the posts, GI's could buy any kind of trinket and souvenirs, bearing their branche of service, unit insignia or the name of their post. These gifts were usually mailed to relatives, friends, ..., or brought home on furlough. All these items were available to the GI's of the 83rd Infantry Division as well to GI's of other divisions stationed in the Camps, etc.!

Camp Atterbury. After Pearl Harbor the U.S. Army began mobilizing all former Army divisions. The 83rd was again activated on August 15, 1942 at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. Camp Atterbury was home to many divisions that were reformed during the war. The 83rd Infantry Division was re-activated at Camp Atterbury under command of Major General Frank W. Milburn.

Tennessee Maneuvers. The 83rd Infantry trained throughout 1942 and participated in the Tennessee Maneuvers from June 22, 1943 to September 10, 1943 when the division was assigned to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky.

Camp Breckinridge. When the Tennessee Maneuvers were over, the 83rd Division was ordered to Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky, a distance of a hundred miles, to be covered by marching at about fifteen miles a day, September 1943. There the men were given advanced infantry training and prepared for overseas duty. The 83rd continued with their training until the spring of 1944. On April 6, 1944, the 83rd embarked the S.S. George Washington from New York City for Liverpool, England under command of then Brigadier General Robert C. Macon.

 

This is a 1943 dated US Army Tennessee Maneuvers pillow sham. It is with the original box which was never mailed or used. It still looks like issued yesterday, not 69 years ago.

Original WW2 US Army Tennessee Maneuvers 1943 pennant. These felt printed pennants were sold to soldiers as a souvenir of the 1943 Tennessee Maneuvers. Many of these were sent home to the folks or sweethearts. The 83rd took part in these maneuvers as a "shake down" before being shipped to England to prepare for the liberation of Europe.
